COBU is a combination of Japanese Taiko drumming and Broadway tap dancing.
Described as “Dance like Drumming, Drum like Dancing”.
Make Your Move, (formerly Cobu 3D) is a movie that debuts Derek Hough (Dancing with the Stars) and BoA Kwon (Queen of Pop in Asia) in their first film in leading roles. The film debuted in July 2013 in some European countries, and on April 17-18, 2014 in Korea and the United States. This film was a limited release.
The movie follows Aya (played by Kwon), a young Korean dancer, who lives in New York City and is the leader of her all female dance crew, COBU. Aya falls in love with Donny (played by Hough), a gritty and edgy hoofer, who moves from New Orleans to New York to help his foster brother Nick (played by Wesley Jonathan) run one of the hottest underground dance clubs in the city.
Aya and Donny’s love story soon parallels the classic “Romeo & Juliet” love story as they find themselves at the center of a bitter rivalry between their brothers’ underground dance clubs.
Don’t be mistaken that “Make Your Move” is only a dance movie. This movie has romance, action, and drama, in addition to the incredible dance scenes that will include contemporary, hip-hop, tango, tap, and acrobatic style dances! Also starring Will Yun Lee, Rich Ting, Miki Ishikawa, and Izabella Miko.
“Make Your Move” is written and directed by Duane Adler (screenwriter for ‘Save the Last Dance’ & ‘Step Up’) and was inspired by COBU creator/choreographer, Yako Miyamoto. An independent passion project that has taken six years to create, this was the directorial debut for Adler.
Director Adler and the cast have emphasized that “Make Your Move” focuses on the storytelling of the movie, not the dance sequences. However, the film used new cutting edge 3D technology with the director’s goal of immersing the audience within the movie, pulling you deeper into the story by making you feel like you are dancing alongside the dancers. The 3D versions were available only in Europe.
The phenomenal choreographers who worked on this film included Napoleon and Tabitha D’umo (aka NappyTabs; So You Think You Can Dance, The X-Factor, American Idol, Mobbed, Jennifer Lopez, Madonna), Nick Gonzalez (So You Think You Can Dance, NRG), and Yako Miyamoto (COBU, STOMP).
