The long awaited movie, Make Your Move, is proving to be a real hit with most fans — the fans who were able to see it, that is!
Overall, in the United States, the movie released in 142 theaters on April 18, and after 11 days ranks 38th. Below are the daily gross totals* as of Monday, April 28, 2014.

The total gross for the United States is $122,293. Worldwide, excluding Korea, the total gross is now at $1,468,293. According to KpopStarz, this film was expected to earn over $6,300,000 after a release in 54 countries.
This limited release movie has obviously not done well at the Box Office, not in the United States, not in Europe, and not even in Korea, where it was expected to do so. Let’s review some of the possible reasons why this is.
1. In Europe and other countries across the pond, where the leading stars are not known, theater attendance was sparse. The film yielded only $1,346,000 in 13 countries. That’s an average of approximately 103,500 per country.
2. In South Korea, where BoA is a huge star, the unfortunate and sad incident of the ferry capsizing, the day before the movie’s release, was the cause for the cancelling of promotional activities for the film.
Despite the ferry incident, this movie in a country of 50 million, surprisingly, had less than 10,000 viewers, and was viewed in only 70 theaters. (On April 17, the movie released at midnight in five movie theaters. Only 57 moviegoers were in attendance.) Mainstream media promotion was nil. The total monetary figures are not known, however, the movie ranks 43.
Ironically, on Naver, Korea’s main search engine, “Make Your Move” is 6th among hits. See here. Sadly, the movie is no longer being shown on the big screen for people to see it.
3. In the United States, the film also has suffered, primarily from lack of promotion. Many Derek, BoA, Wesley Jonathan and Will Yun Lee fans know nothing about this film. The movie has received no television, radio, or newspaper advertising. The only promotion seems to be social media. The caveat here is that you would have to have already known about the film to have sought it out on social media.
The leading stars of this film, Derek Hough and BoA, have hardly mentioned this movie. Other than the required interviews that were given for the film’s premiere screening on March 31, which generated a slue of newspaper reviews of the film, there has been little media coverage to ‘market’ the film to potential moviegoers.
There have been many “free” screenings of this film, not to mention numerous online bootleg versions, which all subtract from the number of possible paid ticket holders.
The limited number of theaters showing this film has obviously hurt the possibility for this movie to do well. It is shown in a limited number of cities and states. The first week the movie was shown, it was in 142 theaters. The second week it was only 40 theaters — across the entire United States! So far, it has not been shown in some countries that normally view movies from the United States.
Unless something changes, and the distributors decide to allocate more funds for promotion, Make Your Move appears to be doomed, despite the fact that fans are loving the movie for it’s dancing; the awesome blending of dance modes (such as tap, hip hop, taiko drum dancing), and Derek and BoA’s sweet chemistry.
If the movie is shown in your area, how fortunate you are. There’s still time to see this film! Hurry to the theater. Seeing it on the big screen is far better than seeing it online or on DVD (whenever it’s released).
