The Anniversary of “Make Your Move” – Two Years Ago

GIF courtesy of Make Your Move’s official Tumblr

The release of Make Your Move starring Derek Hough as Donny and BoA Kwon as Aya has come and gone, yet we’d like to reminisce a bit on the movie because the month of April is its anniversary. 🙂  It was two years ago, on April 17, 2014, that Make Your Move was released in South Korea, followed by its release on April 18 in the US. How long we had waited!

Many of us had followed the cast and crew of Cobu 3D for 3 years, beginning in April of 2011. We sought pictures, listened to all the interviews, tweeted with the cast, and read everything we could get our hands on.  We suffered through all the delays, eagerly awaiting the official release. And once the film was released, we sighed at the lack of promotion of this intriguing dance film (see here).  It had been some journey, right?

For old time’s sake, let’s walk down Memory Lane. Below are just a few pictures, videos, interviews, etc. Enjoy this nostalgic, sentimental look back!

We absolutely loved this exclusive behind-the-scenes video that was released to us by High Top Releasing! In the video, we gained a little inside-look of how the dance scenes were created for the film and how the diverse music was incorporated into MAKE YOUR MOVE. We got nice interviews too from Duane Adler, Derek Hough, BoA Kwon, Napoleon and Tabitha D’Umo, and Yako Miyamoto!

How about this beautiful, romantic, sexy and exquisite video! (Thanks to xkjcharmed21x at Youtube who created it.) The chemistry between Derek and BoA melted the screen! Sigh…. 🙂 They are still our favorite couple to ship. 🙂

You can’t deny the incredible chemistry that Derek Hough and BoA had together on screen in MAKE YOUR MOVE as we watched their characters ‘Donny’ and ‘Aya’ fall in love!

Check out this photo gallery of scenes from Make Your Move of our favorite moments of Donny & Aya! Don’t you just want to go “Awwwww!”?

Enjoy this brief slideshow below of @MYMtheMovies’s marketing teasers. Such neat phrases that say it all. 🙂

No review would be complete without the now famous Official trailer. How many times have we each watched this? Be honest! 🙂

As our final offering for our walk down Memory Lane — for one last time — let’s watch this incredibly sweet “Goodnight” scene between Donny and Aya.

Hope you enjoyed this flashback of Make Your Move (aka Cobu 3D) and all the fond memories it may have evoked. It’s been sweet preparing it for you!

UPDATED Movie GROSSES: “Make Your Move” Suffers from Lack of Promotion!

4 MYM Stars

The long awaited movie, Make Your Move, is proving to be a real hit with most fans — the fans who were able to see it, that is!

Overall, in the United States, the movie released in 142 theaters on April 18, and after 11 days ranks 38th. Below are the daily gross totals* as of Monday, April 28, 2014.

  • Friday – April 18 – $30,089
  • Saturday – April 19 – $30,438
  • Sunday – April 20 – $20, 645
  • Monday – April 21 – $9,617
  • Tuesday – April 22 – $10, 171
  • Wednesday – April 23 – $8,881
  • Thursday – April 24 – $7,792
  • Friday – April 25 – $1,254
  • Saturday – April 26 – $2,193
  • Sunday – April 27 – $1,213
  • Monday – April 28 – $695

The total gross for the United States is $122,293. Worldwide, excluding Korea, the total gross is now at $1,468,293. According to KpopStarz, this film was expected to earn over $6,300,000 after a release in 54 countries.

This limited release movie has obviously not done well at the Box Office, not in the United States, not in Europe, and not even in Korea, where it was expected to do so. Let’s review some of the possible reasons why this is.

1. In Europe and other countries across the pond, where the leading stars are not known, theater attendance was sparse. The film yielded only $1,346,000 in 13 countries. That’s an average of approximately 103,500 per country.

2. In South Korea, where BoA is a huge star, the unfortunate and sad incident of the ferry capsizing, the day before the movie’s release, was the cause for the cancelling of promotional activities for the film.

Despite the ferry incident, this movie in a country of 50 million, surprisingly, had less than 10,000 viewers, and was viewed in only 70 theaters(On April 17, the movie released at midnight in five movie theaters. Only 57 moviegoers were in attendance.) Mainstream media promotion was nil. The total monetary figures are not known, however, the movie ranks 43.

Ironically, on Naver, Korea’s main search engine, “Make Your Move” is 6th among hits. See here. Sadly, the movie is no longer being shown on the big screen for people to see it.

3. In the United States, the film also has suffered, primarily from lack of promotion. Many Derek, BoA, Wesley Jonathan and Will Yun Lee fans know nothing about this film. The movie has received no television, radio, or newspaper advertising. The only promotion seems to be social media.  The caveat here is that you would have to have already known about the film to have sought it out on social media.

The leading stars of this film, Derek Hough and BoA, have hardly mentioned this movie. Other than the required interviews that were given for the film’s premiere screening on March 31, which generated a slue of newspaper reviews of the film, there has been little media coverage to ‘market’ the film to potential moviegoers.

There have been many “free” screenings of this film, not to mention numerous online bootleg versions, which all subtract from the number of possible paid ticket holders.

The limited number of theaters showing this film has obviously hurt the possibility for this movie to do well. It is shown in a limited number of cities and states. The first week the movie was shown, it was in 142 theaters. The second week it was only 40 theaters — across the entire United States! So far, it has not been shown in some countries that normally view movies from the United States.

Unless something changes, and the distributors decide to allocate more funds for promotion, Make Your Move appears to be doomed, despite the fact that fans are loving the movie for it’s dancing; the awesome blending of dance modes (such as tap, hip hop, taiko drum dancing), and  Derek and BoA’s sweet chemistry.

If the movie is shown in your area, how fortunate you are. There’s still time to see this film! Hurry to the theater. Seeing it on the big screen is far better than seeing it online or on DVD (whenever it’s released).

* Box office grosses are credited to Box Office Mojo.

BoA behind-the-scenes of "Make Your Move"

BoA behind-the-scenes of “Make Your Move”

Q: We heard Director Duane Adler wrote the scenario with you in mind.

A: I found that out later while I was filming the movie. When I received the screenplay, I liked it because it focused on dance. At that time, I didn’t have many thoughts of attempting acting, but the visual aspect of this movie that showcases dancing drew me in. I accepted the role because the project didn’t stray too far from the work I’ve always done, and I gained a lot of enthusiasm for acting through it.

Q: Your co-star is Derek Hough from “Dancing With the Stars.”

A: It was the first time acting for both of us. I felt comfortable talking to him about ideas and about acting, so I tried my best to communicate with him. I also remember that we had good chemistry while dancing.

Q: You must have communicated and completed the dialogue in English.

A: Because I spoke English the least among the cast and staff on set, people around me were considerate. I had to face it on set because there wasn’t a translator, but it became easier as I became more comfortable talking and getting friendlier with them.

Q: Do you plan on continuing acting in the future?

A: I actually came here to LA in the middle of filming in Korea. I’m playing a lead role alongside Lee Jung-jae and Seol Kyung-goo in the action film “Big Match,” which will be released in the second half of this year. We’ve been filming for almost five months now, and I’ve done some action scenes as well.

Q: Any last words you want to say to Korean Americans?

A: “Make Your Move” is coming out soon, and I hope that a lot of people, especially those who like dance, will come see it. I’ll be active in both singing and acting this year. I wish for Korean Americans to continue living a good life, a happy life.

Derek Hough & BoA Promote Their Movie “Make Your Move”! (Part II)

Derek's special message to fans about 'Make Your Move'

Derek’s special message to fans about ‘Make Your Move’

The MAKE YOUR MOVE official Facebook account recently posted this video of Derek telling all the fans to go out and watch MAKE YOUR MOVE on April 18th!

Check it out – Facebook Message from Derek

This interview looks like it was done during the MAKE YOUR MOVE LA Premiere and it was posted on MAKE YOUR MOVE’S official youtube account. Derek says that he’s excited to be introduced to international audiences, the Korean audience, and hopes that he made BoA’s fans proud. He also talks about the evolution of writing the song “Let Me In”.

Here is BoA’s interview from MAKE YOUR MOVE’S official youtube account! BoA explains that this movie was her first time acting EVER and even though she felt pressure acting in English (her third language), she had a lot of help and had a great experience with Duane and Derek. She also was very excited to work with choreographers Nappytabs!

In this interview, Derek talks to The Morning Blend (Las Vegas) and explains how he is NOT a tap dancer and had to learn the style for this film. He also talks about collaborating with Nappytabs for the movie and now for his Move Live on Tour project with his sister Julianne!

Derek Hough talks to The Morning Blend

Lastly, Derek speaks with about his character ‘Donny’, learning about BoA and working with her, his favorite scene in the movie, and the differences between working on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ and doing a movie. He also said that his best move in the film is when he kisses BoA!!! Cheeky, Derek, very cheeky! 😉

Our friends at also uploaded an international version if you have trouble playing the video!

“Make Your Move” in 3D Coming to a City Near You….maybe!

make-your-move OST

Below is the chart of the cities in which Make Your Move will be released on April 18. It’s a limited release, folks, so unfortunately, unless it does well in the very first week, this list of cities probably will NOT be expanded.

It all depends on the fans who head to the movie theatres that very first week.

Tell your friends, your relatives, your significant others that it’s necessary to see Make Your Move from April 18 – April 24 (in the United States). The numbers have to be high enough for theatres to make the decision to show the film for another week, and for the distributors to expand the cities in which it is shown.

Here’s what the leading man, himself, has to say to you. Listen!

Spread the word, if you want BoA and Derek’s movie to be successful. Remember, we want this to be a sleeper hit. A ‘sleeper hit’ is a movie that unexpectedly does well despite a poor opening or despite little promotion. For example, Easy Rider, Sleepless in Seattle, Forrest Gump, Sixth Sense, My Best Friend’s Wedding were all sleeper hits.

new promo boa

Unlike movies that promise to be blockbusters due to well known stars and huge publicity campaigns, sleepers start off as unknown quantities, with lesser known stars. Sales start slowly and build from word-of-mouth, as upfront publicity is generally non-existent. Ever wonder why Make Your Move had so many screenings? Their purpose is to generate tons of word-of-mouth advertising. This is often done for low budget or independent films.

So, what’s the over-all message here? You’ve got to spread the word! Our rallying cry is “Make Your Move a Sleeper Hit”. ☺
